Thoughts on Travel–Two Months Later

In our April 18th posting, “Thoughts on Travel”, we noted that we had been on the road almost constantly for the last 17 months. We also wrote that we were looking forward to spending the summer in Wiesbaden and looking forward to staying put for awhile. Well, that didn’t work out quite as planned.

After less than two weeks at home, Jay made an unplanned 10-day trip back to the States, then flew back to Wiesbaden. Two weeks later, Tanya joined Jay for a return trip to the US on May 23. After three days, we signed a deal to buy a house in Henderson, Nevada, outside Las Vegas. June was spent exploring Nevada, then back to Wiesbaden to pack up our stuff for the move to Henderson. So much for the relaxing summer staying in one place.

The adventure continues and undoubtedly this travel obsession will not subside. We’ll just be leaving from a different airport. If anything, the need to explore and experience new things, places, tastes and ideas will likely grow.

The recent death of Anthony Bourdain left all of us saddened and confused. But he left some wonderful thoughts that seem particularly appropriate for us:

“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch. Move.”

“It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.”

We still have so far to go.

Well put! Thanks Jay and Tanya. And as it gets so hot in Henderson, I am sure you will continue to be traveling at least seasonally. Your visit brought me so much joy and I look forward to your next one! Sending much love to you both, Joni

Thanks Joni. It was fun for us as well. It may be hot in Henderson, but of course it’s a “dry heat”. Compared to hot and humid places it’s like being in an oven vs. a sauna. Still hot. Kisses.

What?!? Henderson? You two are full of surprises-so
refreshing! My sister lived in Henderson for many years
and I lived in Vegas. Lots of adventures around there.
Jay does your dad live there?
I love Anthony Bourdain, and definitely parallel his
    Physiology.
Life is a gift, our play ground and our teacher.
Hope to see you sometime this year!!! Would love to
show you our new house. Should be moving in November.

Hi Share. Unfortunately, my dad died 18 years ago, but I’m sure if he were around he’d be a Vegas kind of guy. Looking forward to seeing you in your new home. Our new pad has a wet bar so get ready for some wicked martinis. It’s Vegas, baby!

But what caused you to change your “from” airport since you obviously can fly anywhere from Wiesbaden?

I have good friends in Henderson – Beach Oak Avenue.

We’ve been out of the country for 11 years now and obviously things have gone to hell since we’ve been gone. Got to try and fix things. God, do I have to do everything for these people?

Welcome to Henderson, world travelers! Pete and I lived there in 1998-1999 when he was working on a power plant outside of Boulder City. That was just before Henderson started growing to what it is today. We lived in a condo on Racetrack Rd. Small world. I so enjoy your blog- we are such kindred spirits!
